The physical competitions are that are fought for their objectives and challenges that they bring. They are an integral part of all cultures, past and present. However, every different culture will have its own interpretation of sport. The most effective terms are ones that define the connection between sports and games, play and competitions. "Play," wrote the German theorist Carl Diem, "is purposeless activity, for its own sake, the opposite of work." Human beings do what they must and play because they wish to. Play is autotelic, that is, it has its own objectives. It's voluntary and not coerced. Children who aren't able to comply with the demands of their teachers or parents to play the sport like football (soccer) are not actually playing an activity.
