  The physical competitions are that are fought for their objectives and challenges that they bring.   They are an integral part of all cultures, past and present. However, every different culture will have its own interpretation of sport.   The most effective terms are ones that define the connection between sports and games, play and competitions.   "Play," wrote the German theorist Carl Diem, "is purposeless activity, for its own sake, the opposite of work."
