Sports
The physical competitions are that are fought for their objectives and challenges that they bring. They are an integral part of all cultures, past and present. However, every different culture will have its own interpretation of sport. The most effective terms are ones that define the connection between sports and games, play and competitions. "Play," wrote the German theorist Carl Diem, "is purposeless activity, for its own sake, the opposite of work." Human beings do what they must and play because they wish to. Play is autotelic, that is, it has its own objectives. It's voluntary and not coerced. Children who aren't able to comply with the demands of their teachers or parents to play the sport like football (soccer) are not actually playing an activity. Professional athletes are not when their sole motivation is their pay. In real life it is a fact that motives are often multi-faceted and sometimes difficult to discern. An unambiguous definition is still essential to make practical decisions regarding what is and isn't an instance of play.
There are two kinds of games. The first one is spontaneous and free of constraints. Examples abound. A child spots an unflattened stone, picks the stone up, then launches it into the pond's waters. Adults realize laughing that he's made an unintentional joke. The action is not premeditated and both are somewhat free of constraints. The second kind of game is controlled. There are rules for determining what actions are legal and what aren't. These rules turn spontaneous playing into games, and could be described as controlled or rule-bound game play. Leapfrog, chess "playing house," and basketball are all games. Some of them have relatively simple rules, while others are controlled by a more complicated set of rules. In reality, the rules for games like basketball are a long number of pages.
As games, basketball and chess are clearly different from playing leapfrog or playing in the house. The two games that are competitive, while the other two aren't. You can win a basketball game however, it does not make sense to inquire who won a leapfrog game. In the same way, chess and basketball are games.
Another distinction divides games into two categories one: ones that require the minimum level of physical ability and those that don't. Shuffleboard is a great example of the former. those games on the table like Scrabble and Monopoly can be used to illustrate the second. It should be recognized that even most basic sports, like weightlifting, require some degree of concentration, while other sports, such as baseball, require a significant amount of mental awareness. It is also important to realize which sports have attracted the attention of the human race both as players and spectators, require an enormous amount of physical skill than playing an shuffleboard game. Through the years athletes have displayed amazing power, speed, stamina endurance, dexterity and endurance.
