 The following is a listing of world-wide sports organizations, all one of which is an unofficial governing body that governs the particular sport. They also manage its sport on a world stage, usually establishing rules, promoting the sport for fans and spectators, developing prospective players, and organising world or continental championships. Certain international sports federations, like the International Swimming Federation and the International Skating Union, may supervise multiple sports, which is referred to by the term "separate" sports: FINA has, for instance, the power to regulate swimming diving, synchronised and diving and water polo as distinct "disciplines" within the single "sport" of Aquatics.
 
 International sports associations form an integral element of the Olympic as well as Paralympic movements. Every Olympic sporting event is represented by its respective international sports federation, which also helps to manage the events in its respective sporting discipline at the Games. To be considered an Olympic sport, its international sports federation must be recognised with the International Olympic Committee.
 
 
 Also, an international sporting federation must be endorsed with the International Paralympic Committee to allow the sport to become a paralympic sport, though in the second case, some Paralympic Sports are controlled by a dedicated commission of International Paralympic Committee itself, under the World Para branding, for example track and field athletics for athletes with disabilities is overseen by the IPC itself, under the designation "World Para Athletics". Other Paralympic sports are managed within the framework of the able-bodied equivalent to paralympic cycling. For instance, the UCI governs both ablebodied and paralympic cycling.
